Noel Whelan has claimed that Philippe Coutinho would be a “perfect” signing for Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker suggested that the Brazilian playmaker is an “extraordinary” talent who would suit Spurs’ style of play down to the ground.
A report from The Express has claimed that Jose Mourinho’s men are competing with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United to land the 27-year-old, with parent club Barcelona said to be willing to let him go in the summer for £77 million.
Coutinho is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, but has fallen out of favour with the German giants in recent times, and Whelan believes that Spurs should swoop in for him.
“I think he’d be perfect for Tottenham’s style of play,” he told Football Insider.
“Perfect for Harry Kane as well.
“I think they need somebody like that – I know they’ve got Giovani Lo Celso in there but I think that Coutinho-type player, somebody who can see that pass, someone with that quality from set-pieces.
“We saw what he did at Liverpool. He was extraordinary when he was there, and I think he would really fit Tottenham very well.
“If they can get that one over the line – I know he’s out of favour at Bayern Munich – with the players that would be around him at Tottenham, he could really thrive.
“That kind of signing excites me.”
The South American has six goals and six assists in 19 Bundesliga appearances so far this season.
He has not started any of Bayern’s past three league matches, however, and has not score since hitting a hat trick against Werder Bremen in mid-December.
