Fabian Schar exit looks inevitable as Oumar Solet transfer latest emerges from Newcastle

Newcastle United are surely set to allow Fabian Schar to leave at the end of his contract as they line up a move for Udinese centre-back Oumar Solet.

Eddie Howe is approaching a huge summer window that he must get right to prove that he has the tools to lead Newcastle forward for the years to come.

PIF are set to back him in the transfer market, despite a potential lack of European football, with Udinese star Solet on their radar to bolster Howe’s backline depth.

Their mission to sign the Frenchman surely highlights how veteran defender Schar does not have a future on Tyneside as he nears the end of his contract.

Solet is known to be high on Newcastle’s transfer shortlist for centre-back signings, with defensive additions clearly needed at St James’ Park after some poor recent form on that front.

Newcastle’s accelerated pursuit of Oumar Solet must be bad news for Fabian Schar

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Newcastle are stepping up their interest in Solet ahead of the summer window.

Magpies’ scouts have been scouting him over the last few months, with Udinese willing to sanction a sale for around £20million.

Solet’s 2025-26 Serie A stats

Solet is among the top-performing Serie A centre-backs in several key statistics this season, and at 26-years-old, would be a shrewd signing for Newcastle ahead of next term.

The fact that the Magpies are now accelerating a move for the Frenchman should show Schar that he has no future on Tyneside beyond this summer.

He last featured in early January and is facing a race against time to play again this season as he nears a full recovery from a serious ankle injury.

34-year-old Schar already seems unlikely to land a new contract at Newcastle, with everything considered, and an exit now looks inevitable as the club step up their interest in a direct replacement.

What has Howe said about Schar’s future at Newcastle?

Howe is known to be a big fan of Schar’s abilities, but the decision to retain his services may be taken out of his hands ahead of the summer.

The Newcastle boss recently insisted that Schar’s future is yet to be decided, which should also point to a bigger likelihood of him leaving when his contract expires in June.

He said: “No decisions have been made on Fabian. In terms of guesses and thoughts on his future, that he will be allowed to leave, that is very premature.

“Fabian has been a big miss for us, not underestimated by us at all. (He is) a top player who is very calm and very experienced.

“I’m a massive fan of Fabian and hope we can get him to full fitness by the end of the season.”
