Noel Whelan is adamant Rangers will only hand Alfredo Morelos a new contract if he is committed to the club.
The former Aberdeen and Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the 24-year-old tried to manufacture an exit this summer which ultimately failed to materialise.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday that Morelos and his representatives are, in an unexpected move, seeking a new and improved deal as reward for staying at Ibrox this season.
A host of clubs including Lille, AC Milan, Newcastle, West Brom, Everton and West Ham were reported to be interested in signing the Colombian this summer.
However, Morelos remained at Ibrox beyond last week’s international transfer deadline and is expected to start the first Old Firm clash of the season at Celtic Park on Saturday.
When asked by Football Insider if the striker was deserving of a new contract, Whelan said: “Look, he is already under contract.
“You have to stand by a contract when you sign it.
“They will only give him a new contract if he is committed to the club. No more of this looking for a transfer move.
“He needs to be fully committed to the cause. Steven Gerrard only wants players who are fully committed to playing for Glasgow Rangers. That is all that the fans want to see.
“Now, he needs to go out there this season and prove himself after the fiasco during the summer regarding an exit.
“There is still a lot of trust that needs to be established, starting with a performance against Celtic.”
