Leeds moved a step closer to completing the £3.6million signing of Sweden international Pontus Jansson after their 2-1 win over Barnsley on Saturday, according to a report.

Swedish outlet Skanesport claim that Leeds are contractually obliged to buy Jansson permanently if he makes 20 appearances for the team during his season-long loan from Torino.

It is said that the fee is set at £40million Swedish Krona, equivalent to £3.6million, and that £180,000 of that sum is due to Jansson's first club Malmo.

Janssen made his seventh appearance for Leeds on Saturday as Garry Monk's side sealed their fifth win in six matches, and their fourth in five league encounters.

On-loan Jansson has emerged as a key member of Leeds' team during their excellent recent run after leapfrogging Liam Cooper in the centre-back pecking order at Elland Road.

He delivered another colossal display on Saturday as Monk's team climbed into the top half of the Championship table for the first time this season.

This comes after the 6ft 5in defender revealed that there is a clause in the loan-to-buy deal that brought him to Elland Road.

“I’m still on loan,” Jansson told Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen last month. “But there is a clause that says that if I play 20 games, Leeds must buy me."

Leeds are on course to complete the deal before the turn of the year as the 25-year-old has been in fine form for the Yorkshire giants since his transfer last month.

Jansson and fellow loanee Kyle Bartley have pushed Liam Cooper down the pecking order, while Sol Bamba abruptly quit the club the day after the transfer window shut.

The defender joined Torino from Swedish side Malmo in the summer of 2014 on a free and still has two years left on his current contract with the Italian club.

Jansson built a name for himself in Sweden, where he starred in 89 fixtures and won three league titles as well as a domestic cup during his five-year stay.
