Alan Hutton has revealed his delight after Rangers youngster Nathan Patterson agreed terms on a new contract at Ibrox.

The former Gers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 18-year-old was a player in demand after speaking with his contacts at the club.

The Light Blues confirmed on Saturday that the promising right-back had put pen to paper on a new contract which keeps him tied down until 2022.

Hutton says that the senior staff at Ibrox have high hopes for the youngster and that a new deal is a great move for everyone involved.

Asked if Patterson was someone to get excited about, Hutton told Football Insider: "Yeah, definitely. They speak very highly of him, all through the coaching staff at Ibrox. He's definitely one for the future.

"It's great to tie him down, young prospect, very highly rated, a lot of teams were interested in him so for Rangers to tie him down on a longer contract is brilliant for the club and for him.

"It's definitely a place he can thrive, come through to push Tavernier next season because he'll be young and hungry."

While he is yet to make his first-team debut for the Glasgow giants, having been at the club since the age of nine, Patterson has been training regularly with Steven Gerrard and the senior side this season.

He is also a Scotland under-19 international, having represented his country at every youth level from under-16s.
