Aston Villa may need to make as much as £100million in player-trading profit next season, sources have told Football Insider.

Villa have been benefiting from their £100million sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City for the past three years, helping them meet their profit and sustainability (PSR) requirements.

But under the PSR rules, the money from Grealish’s move will drop out of their calculations for the 2024-25 season.

Sources say the West Midlands giants could now face difficulties managing their losses for the past two campaigns as they look to avoid a potential PSR breach.

Unai Emery’s side are expected to try and sell more young players for a substantial profit over the next year to make up the shortfall.

Aston Villa need to make big sales to meet PSR

Villa sold Omari Kellyman to Chelsea in a £19million deal and Tim Iroegbunam to Everton for £10million just days before the 2023-24 accounting deadline.

Douglas Luiz also joined Juventus in a £42.4million deal, which is believed to have helped the Midlands club narrowly avoid a PSR breach and a potential points deduction next season.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Villa would have been unlikely to fall within the allowable losses limit if they didn’t move their accounting period from 31 May to 30 June earlier this year.

But sources say the Premier League side are expected to face issues again next season after reporting a £119.6million loss in 2022-23, with top-flight clubs only allowed to lose £105million over a three-year period.

Villa sold academy products Aaron Ramsey, Cameron Archer and Jaden Philogene last summer to help them comply with the PSR rules.
