Exclusive: Rangers land £15m windfall - official documents reveal
Rangers have earned a guaranteed £15million after securing their place in the last 16 of the Europa League, sources have told Football Insider.
The Scottish giants registered a 2-1 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday (30 January) following goals from Nicolas Raskin and Vaclav Cerny before Kevin Mac Allister’s late header made it a nervy final few minutes at Ibrox.
Philippe Clement’s side booked their place in the last 16 after claiming four wins and two draws from their eight games, ensuring they finished eighth in the revamped league phase of the competition.
Rangers now won’t be back in European action until early March, with the knockout round play-offs set to take place in mid-February.
Lazio, Athletic Bilbao, Manchester United, Tottenham, Eintracht Frankfurt, Lyon and Olympiacos also secured their automatic qualification for the last 16.
Rangers set for financial boost after European success
As per official Uefa documents released last March, each team will earn a guaranteed £3.6million for playing in the Europa League this season.
They will then be in line for extra cash payments under the governing body’s new value pillar system, which is split into European and non-European segments based on their coefficient ranking and the market pool.
Clubs are awarded £377,000 for each win and £126,000 for a draw in the league phase, meaning Rangers have banked just under £1.8million from their fixtures.
The Glasgow side have also received £1.5million for qualifying automatically for the last 16 as well as £500,000 for finishing in the top eight.
The 36 clubs competing in the Europa League will also be paid an additional amount based on their individual ranking following the conclusion of the eight group games.
Bottom of the table Qarabag have earned £63,000, while Rangers’ eighth-place finish has landed them a further £1.8million.
Sources have told Football Insider that takes the Scottish club’s total prize money so far to around £15.2million, including the payments from the value pillar system.
That is, however, still far less than Celtic are set to earn from competing in the Champions League this season.
Football Insider revealed on 23 January Brendan Rodgers’s side have already raked in around £38million after securing their place in the knockout round play-offs.
But Rangers could be in line to make a significant profit on star forward Hamza Igamane, who signed for £2.5million from AS FAR last summer, following his impressive recent performances.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Ibrox chiefs would accept a “huge” offer for the 22-year-old after several clubs have been keeping a close eye on him.
