'I don't get it' - Exclusive: McAvennie reacts as £10m bid accepted for Celtic target

Frank McAvennie has dismissed the possibility of Celtic making a big money move for Ivan Toney this summer. 

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Jason Jones, the former Parkhead striker argued that the Hoops do not need to buy any more strikers having added Albian Ajeti to their ranks recently.

The 23-year-old joins Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, and Patryk Klimala among Neil Lennon's striking options in Glasgow.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Bhoys recently had a bid of around £3 million rejected for Toney by his current employers Peterborough United.

Since then, talkSPORT have reported that Brentford have had a bid of around £6.5 million accepted for the hitman, with the fee potentially rising to £10 million depending on add-ons.

And McAvennie is convinced that his old club will not make a move to match that offer.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: "They’ll not go for that. I wouldn’t think so. I just don’t see it.

"Edouard’s still there, he’s number one. They’ve just brought in Ajeti from West Ham. They’ve got Griffiths coming back, and he’s a wonderful player, a tremendous player. So I don’t see them spending £6 million up front on Toney, especially when they’ve got the Klimala doing well too. He’s started scoring goals.

"They’ve got four now, I don’t get why they would want another.

"It’s not Celtic’s way to spend that kind of money. They’ll not pay anywhere near £10 million for a striker."

Toney hit 26 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions for Peterborough last season.

The League One club's Director of Football Barry Fry has previously stated that Parkhead would have been the player's preferred option for a move this summer, but also admitted that the Hoops were nowhere near his valuation of the player.
