Newcastle United are currently only willing to pay £30million for Leicester City star James Maddison, sources have told Football Insider.

The attacking midfielder is out of contract at Leicester in 12 months – meaning the Midlands club risk losing him for free in 2024 if they don’t sell this summer.

And as such, Newcastle are only currently willing to pay a fee of around £30million for his services.

That is £20million less than Leicester's £50million valuation of Maddison - who starred despite the Foxes' relegation to the Championship in the 2022-23 campaign.

Both Spurs and Newcastle have registered their interest in the England international since the end of the season.

He notched 10 goals and nine assists in 30 Premier League games during the 2022-23 campaign – even wearing the armband for Leicester on occasion.

Ex-Coventry star Maddison nets a reported wage of £110,000-a-week.

The 26-year-old has managed 43 goals and 34 assists in 163 top-flight appearances since joining Leicester in 2018.

Newcastle will play Champions League football in the 2023-24 season - while transfer rivals Tottenham will be without European football.

The Magpies have already wrapped up the first signing of their summer transfer window - with 18-year-old Yankuba Minteh joining on a long-term deal and immediately heading to Feyenoord on loan.

Eddie Howe's side start their pre-season campaign with a clash against local side Gateshead on 15 July.
