Liverpool will hold further talks with Emre Can at the end of the season in a bid to reach agreement over a new contract, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo claim the Merseyside giants opened negotiations with Can's camp before Christmas over a deal to replace his existing agreement, which expires in the summer of 2018.

It is said initial discussions between the parties have broken down and they are not expected to resume until the summer.

Can reportedly wants a £100,000-a-week deal that will double his current salary and elevate him closer to the bracket of top earners in Jurgen Klopp's squad.

The on-off saga has prompted speculation that Liverpool could be forced to sell the Germany international in the summer rather than risk him leaving on a free transfer 12 months later.

But the Echo report that manager Klopp is keen to keep the 23-year-old and is hopeful a compromise agreement can be struck in the near future.

Can joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 and has been a mainstay of the side for most of his three seasons at Anfield.

He has struggled for consistency in this campaign, with many believing that Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum are more deserving of starting places in central midfield.

But the German was outstanding in Liverpool's win over Arsenal last weekend and would strengthen his hand in contract talks if he has a strong finish to the season.
