Liverpool will be desperate for Georginio Wijnaldum to sign a new long-term contract, according to Paul Robinson.

The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the club will "throw another contract" at the 30-year-old who would leave a "huge hole" in their midfield if he left.

Wijnaldum starred in a much-changed Reds midfield against Leicester on Sunday but uncertainty remains over his Anfield future with just eight months to run on his contract.

The Athletic‘s James Pearce revealed on Friday that the club were “resigned” to the Netherlands international leaving on a free next summer when his current deal expires.

The £25million summer-of-2016-signing has won 133 of his 200 Liverpool appearances - the highest win percentage of any player in the club's history to have reached that milestone.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Wijnaldum's future on Merseyside, Robinson said:

"If Wijnaldum went in the summer they would have been really short on Sunday. He proved against Leicester that he is still a top-class player.

"There was a big onus on his shoulders because of the injuries Liverpool have had and you can see that if he was to leave at the end of the season he would leave a huge hole.

"Liverpool will throw another contract at him and try to get him to sign because if he does leave they will need to find a replacement."
