Frank McAvennie has claimed David de Gea would likely leave Man United if Jordan Pickford joined the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said there is only room for "one number one" at Old Trafford.

De Gea has entered the final 12 months of his contract with the Red Devils.

According to The Telegraph's Mike McGrath (24 September), United are weighing up whether to trigger a one-year option in De Gea's deal.

The Premier League giants may opt to allow the Spain international to leave on free next July following a £61.6million increase in player wages over the last 12 months.

Pickford is said to be an option for Erik ten Hag's side should De Gea exit.

When asked if there was room for Pickford and De Gea at Old Trafford, McAvennie told Football Insider: "I don't think so.

"There’s only going to be one number one.

"You saw what happened with Henderson, he had a go at Man United, saying they treated him badly, that would happen with De Gea as well. He’s a good keeper. I think if it’s true they will have already spoken to De Gea because he’s a big player for Man United. He makes mistakes maybe more than most but he’s a damn good keeper that’s for sure.

"Pickford would be fighting for number one. Maybe De Gea will want to go back home. Either him or De Gea, they’re both good keepers."
