Man United hit by £30m+ blow after Sir Jim Ratcliffe move
Manchester United paid out more than £36million in compensation last season after sacking Erik ten Hag and triggering hundreds of staff redundancies.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed earlier this year Man United would have gone “bust by Christmas” if it wasn’t for his cost-cutting measures at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag was sacked by Man United in October last year before being replaced by Ruben Amorim, who has so far failed to turn the club’s fortunes around on the pitch.
Meanwhile, the Manchester giants made around 450 members of staff redundant across the latest campaign.
Man United published their 2024-25 accounts on Wednesday (17 September), revealing they paid out £36.6million in compensation following the staff redundancies as well as the exits of Ten Hag and former sporting director Dan Ashworth.
How much revenue did Man United generate last season?
Man United smashed their club-record revenue again in 2024-25 after their turnover increased from £661.8m to £666.5m.
That ensures Man United continue to bring in the second-highest revenue in the Premier League behind Manchester City, who are yet to post their latest figures but generated £715m of turnover in 2023-24.
Man United's revenue was boosted by a significant uplift in commercial income, which improved from £302.9m in 2023-24 to £333.3m last season.
The 20-time English champions’ broadcast revenue fell from £221.8m to £172.9m due to their lack of Champions League football, while matchday income increased from £137.1m to £160.3m.
Man United’s losses fell dramatically across the campaign from £113.2m in 2023-24 to £33m last season.
Following the announcement of the club’s results, chief executive Omar Berrada said: “To have generated record revenues during such a challenging year for the club demonstrates the resilience which is a hallmark of Manchester United.
“Our commercial business remains strong as we continue to deliver appealing products and experiences for our fans, and best-in-class value to our partners.
“As we start to feel the benefits of our cost-reduction programme, there is significant potential for improved financial performance, which will, in turn, support our overriding priority: success on the pitch.”
How much was Man United's wage bill last season?
Man United’s wage bill fell from £364.7m to £313.2m across the 2024-25 campaign.
Football Insider revealed on 10 July Ratcliffe is looking to reduce Man United’s wage bill to under £300m this season.
Amorim’s side spent more than £200m on the signings of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon in the recent summer transfer window.
However, they managed to get several top earners off the books, with 13 players leaving either permanently or on loan deals.
Man United have picked up four points from their opening four games of the new Premier League season, while they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town last month.
