Man United, Liverpool and Everton hailed by pundit as £1.5bn commercial deal agreed
Paul Robinson has credited Man United, Liverpool and Everton for the Premier League's prospective £2billion deal with US broadcasters.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one claimed pre-season tours and American ownership in England have helped increase interest across the Atlantic.
According to the Financial Times (November 15th), the Premier League is close to selling its US television rights for a record £1.48billion ($2bn).
ViacomCBS and Disney’s ESPN are reportedly among those trying to take the rights away from current holders NBC.
NBC paid approximately half of £741million [$1bn] to acquire the English top-flight TV rights in 2015.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the increased interest from the US, Campbell said:
"I think the likes of Everton going on pre-season tours there has helped.
"I also think it has a lot to do with the American owners coming in at United and Liverpool.
"The game in general has grown in the USA a lot over the past few years. It has become far more popular with school kids. There is a generation of Americans coming through who appreciate 'soccer'.
"There is a lot more interest and that interest leads to the increased Premier League deal. It's great news for the Premier League financially."
Liverpool and Man United are two of eight Premier League clubs which have US stakeholders.
Arsenal, Aston Villa, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Leeds United and West Ham are the others.
