Mohamed Salah: Liverpool could launch '£140m' spending spree after source's talks update - expert
Paul Robinson has claimed Liverpool could sell Mohamed Salah and reinvest in their squad much like they did in January 2018 with Philippe Coutinho.
However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one fears Salah, 29, would leave "a massive void" at Anfield.
Salah's current deal expires at the end of June 2023 and talks over an extension have so far been unfruitful.
According to Fabrizio Romano (15 March), the Egypt captain is fully focused on the Reds even though contract talks are "broken."
Romano even suggested Salah could run down his agreement and leave on a free in the summer of 2023.
A source with knowledge of Salah's situation told Football Insider (12 March) that the forward wants to stay in the Premier League, even if he has to leave the club.
When asked for his assessment of Liverpool's predicament, Robinson told Football Insider: "We have seen Liverpool do it before with Coutinho and [Luis] Suarez.
"The £140million they got for Coutinho ended up benefitting the club with the Alisson and Van Dijk signings. They put it back into the team and they went to the next level.
"Could they do that again? It remains to be seen. Personally, I think Salah would leave a massive void that would be very difficult to fill."
Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barcelona for £142million in January 2018.
Jurgen Klopp added the likes of Alisson and Fabinho to their squad in the subsequent window.
