Newcastle United could sign an upgrade on Jonjo Shelvey in Leeds United star Tyler Roberts, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Elland Road ace was exactly what the Magpies have missed this term.

It is understood Leeds value the attacking midfielder at £10million as he heads into the final year of his contract.

Hutton insisted Newcastle had missed a mobile playmaker who could dictate possession.

Asked if he thought Roberts had what it takes to become a top player, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: "I think he does. He doesn't start week in, week out for Leeds but when he does, you can see he's got ability.

"He's comfortable on the ball and for me, that's the type of player that Newcastle have missed. Yes, they've got Almiron, Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson who are strong runners. They get forward from defensive positions really well, great engines.

"But sometimes I just feel in that midfield for Newcastle they need someone who's comfortable and can get on the ball.

"Shelvey has got it in the locker but sometimes I think it's a mobility thing. He doesn't really get around the pitch as much as you would want and I think they need that.

"Tyler Roberts, coming off the back of a Bielsa schooling, has got that in abundance. He can move, he can see a pass. It doesn't surprise me that Newcastle are looking at him."

Shelvey is a firm favourite of Steve Bruce, having started all but one of his 28 league appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Roberts has played 14 times in 26 Premier League appearances for Leeds this term.

He scored his first goal in the 2-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday.
