Marseille has entered the race to sign Newcastle winger Florian Thauvin after the Frenchman admitted he would like a move to Lazio, according to a report.

The former Ligue 1 star endured a difficult debut season at Newcastle and was shipped out on loan to Marseille in the second half of the campaign as a result of his inconsistent form.

Newcastle paid around £13million for Thauvin last summer, but the 23-year-old has made it clear that he would like to move elsewhere despite his contract with the Magpies running until 2020.

Italian website GianLucaDiMarzio.com now claim that Marseille have joined Lazio in the pursuit of Thauvin.

Thauvin admitted last week that his agent was working on a potential transfer and it is believed Lazio and Marseille head the list of possible destinations.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle he said: "My agent is in contact with several clubs, that's not for me to speak."

Marcelo Bielsa is due to take over at Lazio and it is believed Thauvin is attracted to the idea of playing under his former manager.

Thauvin was managed by Bielsa for a year at Marseille before he quit the French club last summer and reports are mounting the Argentine wants to lure his former player to Italy.

Marseille on the other hand are eager resign their winger from Newcastle and are hopeful are permanent deal can be struck.
