Rangers fear losing at least one of their star defenders this year amid mounting interest from south of the border, Football Insider understands.

The Glasgow giants have not had to sell any of their major assets yet but that is likely to change following their remarkable campaign.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club are wary of growing interest in centre-back Connor Goldson, right-back James Tavernier and left-back Borna Barisic.

They have laid the foundation for the title challenge that has seen Steven Gerrard's side pull 19 points clear of Celtic following Saturday's 1-0 win at Ibrox.

The new-look recruitment team assembled by director of football Ross Wilson are assessing potential replacements for Goldson and company ahead of the summer window.

Rangers are hopeful of fending off interest this month but know it will be a different story at the end of the season.

As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday, the club are stepping up their interest in Preston centre-back Ben Davies, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Like one of the defender's other main suitors Celtic, Rangers can take advantage of cross-border rules to secure the £5million-valued player to a pre-contract agreement this month.

Premier League sides are looking very closely at Goldson, 28, who has entered the final 18 months of his contract and has yet to sign an extension.

Skipper Tavernier, 29, is also out of contract in 2022, while Barisic, 28, is another who has a growing list of admirers in England on the back of a second consecutive impressive campaign.
