Rangers have set their sights on Bordeaux striker Josh Maja as they assess potential Alfredo Morelos replacements, Football Insider has learned.

The Glasgow giants are braced for the possibility of their star striker leaving this summer amid widespread interest from across the globe.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Rangers director of football Ross Wilson is leading the hunt for centre-forwards and Maja, 21, is on his target list.

He will certainly not come cheaply after his meteoric rise in the last 18 months catapulted him into a pay bracket beyond any player in Scottish football.

Maja was earning just £1,000-a-week at Sunderland when he rejected multiple new contract offers and joined Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux in January of last year.

The £1.5million move secured him a four-year contract that Football Insider has learned is worth £57,000-a-week.

Maja has been capped once by Nigeria but has dual English and Nigerian citizenship and learned his trade at Sunderland after signing from Man City as a 16-year-old.

He scored 15 goals in 24 League One matches in the first half of last season to secure his move to Bordeaux, where he is a key member of the squad if not a regular starter.

Maja has scored eight goals from 24 matches for the French club this season, but made just six Ligue 1 starts.

The forward was outstanding in the first half of the season, when he banged in 28 goals in all competitions but has netted just once in 11 matches since the winter break.
