Leeds are likely to secure the permanent transfer of Pontus Jansson during the January window, according to a reliable journalist.

The Sweden centre-back has been a massive hit at Elland Road since joining on a season-long loan from Torino during the summer window.

Swedish outlet Skanesport stated in October that the Whites are contractually obliged to buy Jansson permanently if he makes 20 appearances for the team during his loan spell.

It is said that the fee is set at £40million Swedish Krona, equivalent to £3.6million, and that £180,000 of that sum is due to Jansson's first club Malmo.

However, Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay claimed it is not guaranteed that Jansson will sign permanently for Leeds when he reaches the 20-match mark.

Hay, who is reliable source of Leeds information, explained on his personal Twitter account that the clause in the defender's contract is merely "an option" for the Championship club to buy permanently at the point.

Nevertheless, Hay, who was responding to questions from Leeds fans on Twitter, said he would be "amazed" if the promotion challengers did not take up the option and sign Jansson permanently.

Jansson has made a huge impression during his half season at Elland Road, which amounts to 18 first-team appearances following the 4-1 Boxing Day win at Preston.

He will reach the 20-match mark if he plays for Garry Monk's side against Aston Villa on Thursday night and Rotherham next Monday.

The defender has been a key figure in the excellent run of results that has lifted Leeds to fifth place in the Championship and in a position where they can challenge for promotion to the top flight.

The defender joined Torino from Swedish side Malmo in the summer of 2014 on a free and still has two years left on his current contract with the Italian club.

Jansson made a name for himself in Sweden, where he starred in 89 fixtures and won three league titles as well as a domestic cup during his five-year stay.
