Liverpool made a last-ditch bid to sign Nottingham Forest wonderkid Ben Brereton before deadline day, according to a report.

The Mirror claim the Merseyside giants enquired about a £2.5million deal for the striker, 17, but were snubbed by Forest.

It is said Liverpool will continue to keep close tabs on Brereton ahead of the summer transfer window as they aim to win the race for his signature.

A slew of other leading clubs, including Manchester United, are tracking hot prospect Brereton as a result of his performances this season.

The England Under-18 international had made such a big impact in youth-team football that he was promoted to the Forest senior squad last month and has been named in the team's last five matchday squads, and appeared in their last three Championship matches.

Brereton underlined his potential with a dramatic injury-time winner in Forest's 2-1 win over Aston Villa last Saturday.

The Championship club believe they are in a strong position after announcing last month that the teenager had signed a new long-term contract.

But Forest showed last summer that they are willing to cash in on their emerging stars when they sold Oliver Burke to RB Leipzig for £13million.
