Newcastle have made an approach to sign in-demand Tottenham defender DeAndre Yedlin, according to a report.

The Mail claim that the Championship club have formally asked Spurs about the right-back, who also has interest from Hull, Aston Villa and Derby.

This comes after the Mail reported at the weekend that there was interest from Magpies manager Rafael Benitez in the 23-year-old right back amid growing doubts over the future of Daryl Janmaat.

Tottenham have placed a £4million price-tag on Yedlin, who is surplus to requirements under Mauricio Pochettino.

Newcastle are seeking out cover at right-back following an injury to summer signing Jesus Gamez, while Benitez has admitted that he will consider offers for Janmaat amid interest from Napoli and West Ham.

Yedlin spent last season on loan at Sunderland, helping them to maintain their Premier League status, and is frozen out at White Hart Lane.

Yedlin played a key role for the Black Cats last season as they avoided relegation under the new England manager Sam Allardyce.

The right-back made 25 appearances for Sunderland across all competitions and made a strong impression with his defending and pace when attacking during his time at the club.

New Sunderland manager David Moyes told the Sunderland Echo at the start of August that they were still interested in the 23-year-old, even though Allardyce is no longer at the helm.

The full-back joined Spurs from Seattle Sounders in 2014 on a four-year contract but has only made one competitive appearance for the Londoners.

Spurs are well equipped in the full-back position with English pair Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier ahead of Yedlin in the battle for right-back.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies have made a move for this 24-goal striker.
