Tottenham are plotting to raid Sporting CP for midfield enforcer William Carvalho, according to a report.

Portuguese news outlet A Bola claims that Spurs are eyeing up the 25-year-old to replace Eric Dier, who is on the shortlist of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

It is understood that Carvalho has a £39.4million release clause tied into his contract at the Libson-based outfit, which has another three years left on it, but the report adds that Sporting will begin to consider offers in excess of £26.2million.

Carvalho is one of the most highly-rated players currently playing in Liga NOS and he was also a part of the Portugual team that lifted the Euro 2016 title in France last summer.

He made 43 appearances for Sporting last season, scoring two goals and suppying three assists in the process.

Tottenham are the only Premier League team to have not many any signings in the current transfer window, but have possibly had their budget boosted on Friday following the sale of right-back Kyle Walker to Manchester City, in a fee widely reported to be around £50million.

Football Insider Verdict

Carvalho would be a top addition to Mauricio Pochettino's squad and the Argentine should really think about coming forward with an offer for the Portuguese international. Dier has been decent in north London for Spurs, but he is definitely one of a small number of first team players that is definitely replaceable. The only down side is that Carvalho can't play in the back line like Dier can, but that can easily be combated by bringing in a new defender too. Spurs look like they have a lot of money to play with and they should make some serious additions to add strength in depth.
