Man United are still interested in bringing centre-back Toby Alderweireld to Old Trafford this summer, but Tottenham are playing hardball, according to a report.

The Express claims that Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the enforcer and had wanted a deal sorted out before Alderweireld jetted out to Russia for the World Cup with Belgium.

However, Tottenham have remained resolute in their negotiations and want £60m for their star defender.

It is said that Tottenham want to sell this summer before a clause is triggered in his contract that could see him leave for just £25million next year.

However, United are now looking around to see if they can get more for their money, with deals for Raphael Varane and Clement Lenglet two options Mourinho is exploring.

Football Insider verdict:

Alderweireld is a great player and he's still got a good few years left in his tank. He's proved this season that he is still Tottenham's best centre-back, although he hardly got any game time because of his contract situation. However, he's 30 next season and £60million is a huge amount of money. Daniel Levy is one of the toughest negotiators in the business and at the moment he's not budging from that valuation, but as the time ticks down on the transfer window, he might be forced to unload him for less. Keeping a player that they know will be leaving next summer isn't a situation that Mauricio Pochettino will want and he's already proved that he's willing to let Alderweireld fester on the sidelines. That's not a good situation for either party so we hope it gets sorted out before the window closes. If United do pull out there are plenty of other clubs who would want Alderweireld, but perhaps none that will be willing to spend £60million on him.
