Leeds United are pushing hard to sign Valencia striker Alvaro Negredo in what would be a sensational deal, according to a report.

The Mirror claim the Championship giants are firmly in the running to sign the forward, 31, before the transfer window shuts at the start of September.

It is said that Leeds are ready to meet the £6.4million asking price for the striker as they aim to beat Premier League outfit Swansea to his signature.

United director of football Victor Orta brokered the deal that took the 21-times Spain international to Middlesbrough last summer when he was in charge of recruitment at the Riverside Stadium.

The Mirror report that Negredo is willing to listen to what Leeds have to offer even though he is already in talks with Swansea.

Negredo has been linked with a move to Leeds this summer in the Spanish media after the club signed a number of players from his country following the full takeover of owner Andrea Radrizzani.

The Telegraph claim the Valencia striker is on £100,000-a-week, a salary that was paid in its entirety during his loan to Middlesbrough last season.

Negredo has a fine track record in Spain and also scored 23 goals in his single season at Manchester City in 2013-14 but he did not quite live up to his reputation at Boro.

The Spaniard scored 10 goals in 39 matches to top their goal charts but was unable to prevent their relegation to the second tier.

Negredo has two more years to run on his Valencia contract.
