The new Rangers contract signed by Alfredo Morelos has made him comfortably the highest paid player at the club, Football Insider sources understands.

The Colombian put pen to paper last weekend on a new deal that runs until 2022 after Steven Gerrard convinced the Ibrox hierarchy to extend the key player's stay.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the four-year agreement is worth £30,000-a-week and makes Morelos the club's top earner ahead of £25,000-a-week Scott Arfield.

Rangers sprung into action to tie down Morelos amid strong interest in hm from French sides Bordeaux and Marseille towards the end of the transfer window that shut last Friday.

The Colombian's representatives held talks with Steven Gerrard and Rangers officials and an agreement was quickly secured after the manager privately urged the board and chairman Dave King to pull out all the stops to look after a player he regards as essential to the side.

Morelos, who joined Rangers last summer from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2017, has now penned his third contract in little over a year after also landing a new deal in March.

The 22-year-old finished last season as Rangers' top scorer with 18 goals in his debut campaign for the club, and has started the new season in fine form with six goals in 13 games in all competitions to earn a call-up to the Colombia squad.
