Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen wants to stay at the club beyond next summer and commit to another new contract, Football Insider understands.

The Belgium international, 32, has entered the final year of his deal after signing a 12-month extension last December.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that Vertonghen is eager to extend his spell at the club and open talks on another extension.

Vertonghen turns 33 next April and will have been at White Hart Lane eight years by the end of the campaign.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is renowned for handing out only short-term deals for players who are in their 30s and the best offer the defender is likely to get from the club is another 12-month agreement.

Vertonghen remains fully committed to Tottenham despite suffering the highly unusual experience of being omitted from the team for the first three matches of the season despite being fit and available.

The 116-times Belgium international was in the stands for the opening-day win over Aston Villa and then on the bench for the subsequent two matches.

He was restored to the starting line-up for the 2-2 derby draw against Arsenal as Davinson Sanchez was pushed out to right-back.

Sanchez has returned from international duty with an injury and is set to miss Saturday's clash against Crystal Palace, which means Vertonghen is likely to continue alongside Toby Alderweireld.
