Southampton will not be put off from sacking under-pressure boss Russell Martin for compensation reasons, sources have told Football Insider.

The south coast club sit bottom of the Premier League after losing a crucial six-pointer against Wolves on Saturday (9 November).

According to the Southern Daily Echo (23 October), the cost of replacing Martin with a new manager will be around £12million.

The Scot was given a new contract at St Mary's Stadium in the off-season after leading Southampton to play-off success.

Sources say that while the payout would be a blow to the club's finances, the final figure will not put chiefs off deciding to sack Martin.

It is believed that a change at the top will be inevitable if bad results continue and the fans turn against the 38-year-old boss.

Southampton prepared for a change at the top despite £12m compensation payout

Southampton have scored just seven goals in 11 top-flight games this term, the worst record of any Premier League side.

Their only Premier League win this term came against Everton earlier this month, while the Saints also drew against Ipswich in September.

The south coast club surrendered late leads at home against the Tractor Boys and Leicester to drop crucial points.

Martin's side now face Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham in their next five league fixtures.
