Chelsea have reached a deal in principle to sign midfield wonderkid Kendry Paez, sources have told Football Insider.

The 15-year-old, who plays for Independiente del Valle in his native Ecuador, is one of the most sought-after youngsters in world football.

It is believed that Paez could cost Chelsea around £20million - with any potential fee set to rise depending on his performances up to his 18th birthday.

The youngster cannot link up with the Blues until he turns 18 in May 2025.

Even then, his role in English football will be determined by his ability to get a work permit.

Sources with knowledge of the situation told Football Insider that Chelsea are confident that Paez will be playing international football in due course - which would make it easier to gain a permit.

Nevertheless, backup plans will be drawn up for the midfielder to spend a season on loan in Europe in order to gain the experience needed.

Players targeted by English clubs from foreign leagues must accrue 15 points under the FA’s post-Brexit system - with points issued according to criteria such as international caps or appearances made in elite domestic or continental competition.

Paez has already been promoted to the Independiente first team despite his tender age.

He became the youngest-ever player in the Ecuadorian Serie A on Saturday (25 February) - marking the occasion with a goal to help his side to a 3-1 victory over Mushuc Runa.

Chelsea

Chelsea spent a reported £292million on senior players in the January window but have also spent lavishly on youth recruitment.

The Blues completed the signing of highly-rated Southampton striker Jimmy-Jay Morgan, 17, earlier this month.
