Chelsea can advance their plans to expand Stamford Bridge after agreeing a deal to buy a nearby plot of land, Football Insider can reveal.

Todd Boehly promised Blues fans that the new ownership group at Chelsea would invest in expanding and improving the stadium following their takeover in 2022.

The stadium’s capacity currently sits at 40,341 and plans for expansion have been boosted after a deal was struck to buy land next to the venue.

The Sir Oswald Stoll Mansions site in Fulham has agreed in principle to sell a large majority of the site to Chelsea.

The two parties are finalising the agreement, which is also subject to further consultation from residents in the area.

The Daily Mail revealed last May that Housing Association Stoll were open to selling the plot for £50million.

As part of Boehly’s £4.25bn takeover of Chelsea, the ownership group pledged around £1.75bn to improve the club’s squad, facilities and infrastructure.

That budget can now be used to either expand Stamford Bridge’s capacity or construct a state-of-the-art fan zone in the newly-purchased plot of land.

Plans to expand the stadium in other directions were hindered by private land and railways, but the sale of the Stoll Mansions site provides Chelsea with the chance to develop their ground.

Following Boehly’s takeover there were talks held about Chelsea building and moving into a new stadium, but the American billionaire has since committed to redeveloping Stamford Bridge.
