Sources: Jon Russell frozen out by Huddersfield Town due to contract wrangle
Huddersfield Town midfielder Jon Russell has been frozen out due to an ongoing contract wrangle with the club, sources have told Football Insider.
The Championship club have been in negotiations with the 22-year-old and his representatives in a bid to tie him down to a new long-term contract but have yet to reach a successful conclusion.
Russell has been left out of the starting XI for the last six games and was not even named in the matchday squad for four of those games, despite being a regular starter earlier in the campaign.
He began six of Huddersfield’s opening seven Championship games this season but, as the contract situation has not been resolved, the club have decided to freeze him out.
Russell, who is out of contract in June 2023, was one of Huddersfield’s standout performers last season as the club reached the Championship play-off final against all odds.
The Chelsea academy product was instrumental for Carlos Coberan’s side last season as he played a key role in their late push for promotion.
Russell, who earned his first senior Jamaica call-up in September, can play in central midfield and holding midfield.
He made 22 appearances in the 2021-22 campaign, including 15 starts in the Championship.
Russell has followed that involvement up with eight outings across all competitions in the new season.
Huddersfield currently find themselves bottom of the second tier after losing nine of their 16 games so far in 2022-23.
The Terriers face Sunderland on Wednesday (2 November) with the potential to climb off the foot of the table.
