Tottenham have scheduled new contract talks with Toby Alderweireld as they look to tie him down to a long-term deal, Football Insider understands.

The defender, 30, is out of contract at the end of the season but there is growing hope in the Spurs boardroom he will commit to an extension after failing to secure a summer move.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the club are planning to offer Alderweireld a three-year contract worth around £120,000-a-week.

This would be more than double his current agreement and could be enough to keep hold of Mauricio Pochettino's first choice centre-back.

Alderweireld was available for £26million this summer but he surprisingly did not generate enough interest from Europe's elite clubs to persuade him to quit White Hart Lane.

He is now set to stay beyond the closure of the main European windows and is now looking at remaining at Tottenham well beyond his 31st birthday next March.

Alderweireld has started each of Tottenham's opening two Premier League matches this season alongside Davinson Sanchez in the centre of defence.

This comes after the Belgium international made 45 Premier League and Champions League starts among 50 appearances in all competitions last season.
