Wigan defender Tom Pearce has agreed a new contract with the club to end speculation over his future, Football Insider understands.

The former Leeds man, 23, was linked with a move earlier in the window with his existing deal due to expire in the summer.

A recruitment source has now told Football Insider that Wigan have moved to secure Pearce’s future and an agreement is in place.

He is set to sign a new two-and-half year deal at the DW Stadium.

Pearce arrived at Wigan in the summer of 2019.

He left Leeds, where he made seven Championship appearances and scored once.

These outings came across two campaigns as Pearce struggled for first-team minutes.

A loan to League One Scunthorpe followed during the second half of the 2018-19 campaign though he only made nine appearances for the club.

Since joining Wigan, Pearce has made 55 appearances and provided 13 assists for his teammates.

19 of those appearances have come this season although the left-back has only made nine appearances in the league.

On 9 January, The Sun's Alan Nixon reported Preston North End were interested in bringing Pearce to Deepdale.

However, the defender is set to commit his future to Wigan ahead of the second half of the season.

Wigan sit top of the League One table and have four games in hand on second-placed Sunderland.

The Latics are next in action against Cheltenham on Saturday (29 January).
