Tottenham owners now ‘unconvinced’ by Thomas Frank as sack talk continues after £60m transfer failures
Thomas Frank has endured a challenging few months as the Tottenham manager following their unconvincing run of form.
Tottenham were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday (11 January), ensuring Frank’s side have now won just one of their past seven games in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Spurs currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, but they are under no threat of relegation.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (10 January) Frank is on the verge of being sacked by Tottenham just six months after joining from Brentford.
The north London giants are yet to make a new signing in the ongoing January transfer window.
Why Tottenham may decide not to back Thomas Frank in January
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Tottenham could decide not to back Frank this month if they don’t feel he’s going to be their manager long term.
Spurs spent around £180m on new signings last summer, with eight players arriving through the door.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I expect them to generally spend more money over the next few years than they have spent over the past few years.
“I think the question there is, are they going to do it under Frank or are they just going to say, ‘Look, it's probable that this guy is not going to be the manager long term’.
“It's not going well. They're in 14th again, and it’s another pretty drab season. They've played 21 games, they've won seven. They've got 27 points. I mean, they'll look at it and go, ‘Well, look, we're only six points off Brentford’.
“There are a lot of teams in there that are really bunched together above the relegation pack. It's kind of very fluid.”
Tottenham told to avoid making more transfer 'mistakes'
Borson suggested Tottenham are “not convinced” by Frank as they consider making new signings before the window closes on 2 February.
“They're probably not convinced with the manager, and in that scenario, they can't afford that many more mistakes,” said Borson.
“They have spent a lot of money on £60m players that have been pretty mediocre, and they build up. It compounds as a problem. You've got to have some big hits.
“I think their issue is probably, ‘Do we just stick with what we've got, see how we do in the Champions League, bank the money, reconsider Thomas Frank in the summer and look at it next season and think about the summer?”. I think they're unlikely to go big in the winter now.”
Tottenham’s next fixture sees them take on West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday (17 January).
