Tottenham told to complete '£50m' striker deal as pundit issues 'huge' claim
Tottenham should spend £50million on a striker who can serve as back-up to Harry Kane in January.
That's according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs' plans for the upcoming January transfer window.
Kane, 29, was in fine form for Tottenham during the first half of the season, scoring 12 goals in 15 Premier League games.
However, the next top-scorer for Spurs this season is midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur with Heung-Min Son and Richarliosn yet to find their best form.
When asked what Tottenham should do in January, McAvennie told Football Insider's Ben Wild, "Go big on a striker.
"Kane is world-class but he isn't going to be at the top of his game for too much longer, what is he, 29? He's got maybe two years left at the top level and we know what he is like for injuries.
"There isn't really another out-and-out striker ready to come in and replace him so if Tottenham are serious about challenging for trophies and they want to keep getting in the Champions League, they need to sign a proven striker.
"I'm talking £50million. Go out and bring him to Tottenham, that puts them in such a better position. I think they lose a lot when Kane isn't there so to have guaranteed goals ready to replace him would be huge.
"When is the last time Tottenham had two properly good strikers? Defoe and Crouch? From what I have seen, ever since Kane came in there has been no one of any real quality.
"There were a few loan players and players who just weren't good enough so they didn't stay very long. Son can play there but he has been poor this season.
"It's a problem Spurs need to fix, for me.
