Paul Merson has judged that Newcastle should be able to escape their relegation battle if they spend money reinforcing their squad during the January transfer window.
The Magpies have found themselves at the bottom end of the Premier League table this season after an abysmal run of form, with seven defeats in their last eight games, and just one point from a possible 24 resulting in a slide down towards the relegation zone.
Rafael Benitez and his men are currently sitting just a point and two places above Crystal Palace in the last of the places in the drop zone, who themselves are level on points with West Brom and West Ham, who sit a place above and below the Eagles respectively.
Merson said on Sky Sports’ website: “I would be worried about Newcastle’s form more than anybody’s at the moment.
“They are on a terrible run, but their situation might change if they have investment from new owners in January. Football changes.”
Newcastle will be hoping to turn their fortunes around sooner rather than later, with a trip to Arsenal lined up on Saturday.
Meanwhile, their fans will be hoping that the takeover goes through and gives Benitez the money he needs to steer Newcastle away from the drop zone.
In other Newcastle United news, Shay Given has said that the club must look to ship this fringe figure out of the club in January.
