Report: Newcastle to make January decision on 24-year-old attacker, contract ends in six months

By Will Butcher

Newcastle are set to welcome back Sammy Ameobi to St. James’ Park from loan side Bolton in January, according to a report.

The Shields Gazette have revealed that Ameobi will return to Tyneside after Monday’s game against Coventry City, before the Toon make a decision on his future.

The 24-year-old attacker has been on loan at the League One outfit for the first half of the season, where he has played a pivotal role in Wanderers’ rise to second in the third tier of English football.

Known for his explosive pace and ability to glide past defenders, Ameobi has struck four times this season during his 22 league and cup outings.

Ameobi has just six months remaining on his current deal and is looking to impress manager Rafa Benitez or future employers in order to earn a new contract.

The Newcastle academy product may have done enough to catch the eye of former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss Benitez, as he continues to star under manager Phil Parkinson.

Parkinson wants to keep him for the rest of the season but a return to St. James’ Park is expected before Benitez makes his decision.

With key players missing for the Africa Cup of Nations (Mohamed Diame, Christian Atsu and Chancel Mbemba), Benitez might decide that Ameobi’s services are needed in the north east for the second half of the season.

However, with just six months left on his contract, a more long-term solution is required.

In other Newcastle news, this senior trio have given Benitez a boost ahead of the Championship clash against Blackburn.
