Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch believes Gers boss Graeme Murty will be looking to bring a core of British players in in the January transfer window as he rebuilds the Ibox squad.
Murty has already tied down Declan John to a permanent deal and signed Sean Goss on loan from QPR until the end of the season as well as hoping to get a deal for Brighton wiger Jamie Murphy over the line in the next few days.
McCulloch was part of an overhaul of the club’s squad when Walter Smith signed him months after replacing Paul le Guen in the Ibrox dugout 11 years ago.
McCulloch insists that Murty will look to do similar and surround himself with players who understand the “pressures” that come with playing for the Ibrox giants.
“Looking back, Walter had clearly decided he had to bring a Scottish spine back to the club. He wanted to surround himself with players who knew what it meant to wear the jersey and who could handle the pressures involved,” McCulloch said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“He did bring in guys like DaMarcus Beasley, Carlos Cuellar, Jean-Claude Darcheville and Daniel Cousin but the majority of his signings were guys with a Scottish or British mentality.
“The core of the group were Scottish boys, many of whom has played together for the national side. Walter knew he could depend on us to give everything to the cause and that’s exactly what Graeme Murty will be looking for right now.”
McCulloch played over 300 games for Rangers over eight years at Ibrox and was appointed captain after American international Carlos Bocanegra left the club in 2012.
The 39-year-old played and scored for Rangers in every division in the Scottish league after the club’s financial meltdown and demotion in 2012.
During his time at Ibrox, McCulloch lifted three Scottish titles, three Scottish League Cups, two Scottish Cups, a Scottish Third Division title, League One title and played in a UEFA Cup final.
