Former Tottenham star tears into Spurs' squad after 'disappointing' display

Former Tottenham star Clive Allen has said that the club’s lack of squad depth will see Mauricio Pochettino and his side struggle to compete in the top competitions.
The Argentinian manager made six changes to his starting XI for their League Cup clash against Championship side Barnsley and managed to scrape a 1-0 victory to see themselves through to the fourth round.
However, Allen, who made 105 appearances and scored 60 goals for the North London side during a four year spell was not impressed by the quality of the performance.
He says that although Spurs’ regular starting line up has what it takes to compete against the top sides, he tore into the rest of the side, saying the lack of quality running through the squad and the youth players will see Pochettino’s side falter.
He told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast (Wednesday 20/09, 06:00) on talkSPORT: “He [Pochettino] understandably changed the side up and gave a number of young players an opportunity, which was really positive, but it was a disappointing performance.

“If you are looking at the starting eleven – the strongest starting eleven – Spurs should be up there with the pace-setters.
“He has not got the strength in depth or quality in depth that is going to be necessary to be really competitive in the Champions League and the Premier League.”
Spurs have endured a frustrating start to the Premier League season, with impressive away wins over Newcastle and Everton offset by their disappointing home form.
The club are yet to win at Wembley, their temporary home for the season, in the league, with a defeat to rivals Chelsea followed by draws agains Burnley and Swansea, and currently sit fifth on eight points, one point behind fourth placed Newcastle.
However, their European campaign started much brighter, as they impressed against German giants Borussia Dortmund to secure a 3-1 victory at home in the Champions League.
The club’s next game sees them travel across the capital to take on West Ham on Saturday.
