Ex-Tottenham recruitment guru explains why this player was the perfect signing

By Harvey Byrne

Former Tottenham head of player identification Rob Mackenzie has spoken of why Toby Alderweireld was the perfect signing for the club.

Alderweireld, 27, was brought to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2015 for a fee of £11.5million.

He had played with Jan Vertonghen at Ajax while they also starred together in the Belgium national side.

The centre-back star had also had a year of playing experience in the Premier League with a loan move to Southampton and recruitment guru Mackenzie has pointed out these reasons for why Tottenham made the choice to purchase him.

When making the decision to obtain Alderweireld, Mackenzie explains to Sky Sports how the scouting system pointed out the player’s “elite experience, flexibility factor, mind and body, defensive record, perfect partner and winning mentality,” as key attributes.

“When I was at Tottenham Hotspur we assessed a number of prospective central defensive partners for Jan Vertonghen,” told Mackenzie to the Sky Sports website.

“But it soon became apparent that the stand-out candidate was Toby Alderweireld.

“He is an interesting case study because his statistical performance profile wasn’t necessarily that significant but there were key themes associated with him that meant he was a really good fit.”

Since joining Tottenham Alderweireld has played in 65 fixtures for the north London club and has helped form one of the best back fours in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side currently boast the best goals against tally in the top flight with just 14 conceded from their 20 matches.

The defender has also helped Spurs break into the top four of the Premier League and they could go one step further this season with just seven points separating them from top of the league Chelsea.
