Frank Lampard delivers verdict on Gerrard at Rangers after working closely together on TV

By Richard Parks

Frank Lampard has claimed on talkSPORT Steven Gerrard has what it takes to cope with the pressure if he is appointed the new manager at Rangers and is convinced it is a “great opportunity”.

Gerrard is widely reported to be on the verge of taking over the Ibrox hot seat, which was made vacant on Tuesday morning when Graeme Murty quit the post he had been appointed to until the end of the season.

Chelsea great Lampard knows Gerrard well from both their England days as well as in their current roles as pundits for BT Sport.

Speaking on Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast programme, Lampard said: “In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it’s a great opportunity for him.

“If it feels right, I think he can handle that pressure from his playing days, he’s no stranger to that with the career he had in the game.

“He has cut his teeth at Liverpool with the young lads there and at some point Steven is going to step out of that and go into managing men, managing a first-team.

“So that’s why I think Rangers would be a great opportunity for him.”

Football Insider verdict:

The rivalry that marked Gerrard and Lampard’s playing careers has long been forgotten in the TV studio, where both have established reputations as sharp analysts who speak their minds, deliver genuine insight and aren’t afraid to go in two-footed on those they once played with (and usually tore to shreds). As Lampard points out, he has grown to know Gerrard well away from epic Premier League and Champions League battlegrounds, as well as the England dressing room where their talents could never be aligned in the same midfield. Lampard will surely have been given the heads-up that the Liverpool icon is headed to Ibrox, and probably a long time before the story broke. He will also know that it’s a huge challenge, but one that Gerrard has the skill-set to overcome. One thing is for sure, the ex-midfielder is used to dealing with intense pressure and expectation. That will not be a new feeling.
