'From what I know...' - Exclusive: Kevin Phillips makes big Sunderland takeover claim

Kevin Phillips has insisted that Sunderland owner Stewart Donald is “a man of his word” and expects a takeover of the club to be completed.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Black Cats idol made clear that the businessman has had a “great try” at the Stadium of Light and is confident the club are well placed to thrive if there’s a chance of ownership.

Donald placed the club publicly up for sale in December, and has since been working behind the scenes in a bid to find new owners.

“First and foremost, it was clear from the outset what he wanted when he came in,” Phillips told Football Insider. “He has never had the money that the billionaires have. It was clear in that he wanted promotion and then he would have looked to sell for a profit.

“He gave it a great try and backed Jack Ross. Funds were available but it never quite came off.

“Credit to the chairman as well, the supporters vented their frustrations and wanted him out and he went.”

Reports from American news outlet Bloomberg have claimed that the Sunderland hierarchy have been holding “serious discussions” with at least two potential buyers over a deal.

It is stated that Donald wishes to find a new buyer by the end of the month, and suggests that his asking price is around the £40million mark.

“They are business people, they are not going to give it away,” Phillips added to Football Insider. “He made it clear that he is talking to people. I expect something to happen.

“From what I know about the man, he is a man of his word and if he is talking to potential buyers then for the football club, moving forward, it can only benefit them.

“I am sure there is people out there that would love to have a chance of owning Sunderland FC.

“They know the infrastructure is there. Yes, they are not in the league where most potential buyers would want but the fans are there, the facilities are second to none. It is just whether you can get out of the league this season.”
