Noel Whelan has claimed that it is Todd Cantwell’s agent who has been pushing for a move to Leeds United and not the club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds forward and boyhood Whites fan said the club may well be interested in the 22-year-old but are not “desperate” for him.
This site revealed last week that the Yorkshire giants had tabled a £15million bid for Cantwell who has been left out of Norwich City’s last two matchday squads.
The attacker was one of a number of young stars that impressed for the Canaries in the Premier League last season.
The England under-21 star scored six goals and provided two assists in 37 top-flight games but his efforts were not enough to stop his boyhood club being relegated.
Leeds have until 5pm on 16th October to sign players from the Football League so could still make a move for Cantwell.
Asked by Football Insider whether he could see a deal happening, Whelan said: “From what I have heard, was it Cantwell’s agent that was pushing that one? That is what I’ve been hearing on the grapevine.
“Leeds might be interested in him, but they weren’t desperate for him.
“It’s more his agent pushing that one.
“If he did come to Leeds we’d be getting a very good young player and we know Marcelo Bielsa likes that. But it obviously wasn’t his first port of call. There were other irons in the fire that he was looking at.
“Raphinha, I’m sure he was looking at and monitoring for quite a while now.”
Brazilian winger Raphinha became Leeds’ latest signing after his deadline day move from Rennes.
He joins winger Rodrigo, defenders Robin Koch and Diego Llorente as Bielsa’s additions to his senior squad this window.
