FSG have Arne Slot sack decision all wrong, he deserves to go after Liverpool vs Chelsea

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have backed themselves into a corner by not replacing Arne Slot as Liverpool boss this season.

The latest update on the Dutchman’s future is that the hierarchy intends to back the manager during the summer window and into next term, but supporters are understandably frustrated.

With two matches remaining, the Reds should still qualify for the Champions League, despite such a topsy-turvy set of results in 2026. That shouldn’t be enough to save Slot, however.

Liverpool would have no end of potential suitors to replace Slot during the summer, especially with Xabi Alonso still a free agent. Still, the owners are hiding behind the scenes rather than making the hard decisions.

Arne Slot is no longer feeling the love at Anfield

Slot’s side took an early lead against Chelsea on Saturday, 9 May, with Anfield erupting as Ryan Gravenberch curled home a beautiful effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Just as expected, though, the Reds took their foot off the gas, allowing Calum McFarlane’s side to equalise via a strange free-kick in the 35th minute. The tide had completely turned on Merseyside once again.

Ahead of the game, it was clear the Blues were lacking confidence, having just fallen to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. There was barely any fight.

But 90 minutes later, they could have easily put Liverpool to the sword. Anfield booing as a collective when Rio Ngumoha was substituted said it all.

Champions League qualification or not, Slot should be gone this summer.

Who could replace the struggling Liverpool boss?

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool return has been ruled out, despite rumours of a potential return to football for the Anfield legend. There are still many big names out there waiting to be snapped up.

As already discussed, Alonso remains on the market ahead of the summer, but he is unlikely to be a free agent for much longer, even if his Real Madrid stint came to a rather sorry end.

Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola has certainly done enough to earn a move up the Premier League table, and the Spaniard has already been tipped to be the perfect manager for Liverpool.

The Liverpool owners have a plethora of talent to choose from, and yet, the expected outcome is that Slot continues to be backed for the 2026-27 campaign. Supporters will just have to see how that plays out.
