Gabriel Martinelli: Arsenal may have found new Thierry Henry after training ground reveal - pundit

Arsenal could turn Gabriel Martinelli into their new Thierry Henry, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England claimed Martinelli could start as a number nine and drift out wide just like Henry did when he was Arsenal’s talisman.

Football.London reported on Sunday (13 February) that the 20-year-old has been playing as a central striker during training sessions at London Colney.

It is reported Arsenal will look to sign a striker in the summer with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah out of contract at the end of the season.

Martinelli has played on the wing for the Gunners since his 2019 move from Brazilian side Ituano.

Asked whether he could see him thriving through the middle, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent, yes.

“He looks like that sort of number nine who will drift out wide from the centre and make runs behind defenders and be a menace.

“He can finish too. I think he’s got everything to be a number nine.

“Then you can fit Nicolas Pepe on one wing and Bukayo Saka on the other. It definitely works, for me.

“Lacazette doesn’t offer enough agility and speed to play as Arsenal’s number nine at the moment.

“Martinelli can be like Henry and Henry did it all. I don’t see why Martinelli can start in the centre and drift out wide. He’s got it all as a centre-forward.”

Martinelli has scored 16 times and provided nine assists in 70 games for Arsenal, including 40 starts.

He is suspended for Arsenal’s next game after being shown a red card in the 1-0 win over Wolves last week.
