Kevin Phillips claims Gareth Bale will retire when his Real Madrid contract expires after announcing plans to leave Tottenham at the end of the season.
The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted that Bale’s loan move to Spurs hasn’t worked out despite a recent flurry of goals.
Speaking to Sky Sports last week, Bale revealed his intention to return to Real Madrid at the end of his loan spell at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Phillips claims he isn’t surprised by Bale’s comments and backed the player to just pick up a wage during the final year of his Real Madrid contract.
“It’s no surprise. I know he’s got a few goals of late but the move hasn’t worked out,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“I thought it would reignite his career but it’s no surprise that those comments have come out.
“Reading between the lines, I can see Gareth going back and spending another year at Real Madrid, staying under the radar and getting paid.
“Then he’ll probably retire at the end of that next season to go and play golf somewhere. It’s no surprise, it hasn’t worked out for the money they paid.”
Bale has five goals and two assists across 12 Premier League outings during his second spell at Tottenham.
Four of those goals have come in his last four games with braces against Burnley and Crystal Palace giving Spurs fans a reminder of what he used to do before his switch to Madrid.
In other Tottenham news, this pundit claims Harry Winks needs to leave Spurs for the good of his career.
