Gary Neville has slammed Ashley William for his “stupid” challenge on Emre Can as Everton were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool at Anfield.
Prior to the half-time break, centre-back Williams appeared to stamp on Can’s back while he lay on the floor.
It appears as though the referee didn’t see the incident added to the fact that Can did not react to the “ridiculous” challenge by the experienced player.
During that moment, the Reds were leading the feisty Merseyside fixture 2-1 with a number of crunching tackles being made by both teams.
Former Manchester United defender did not hold back on his comments during the live commentary of the match which was aired on Sky Sports 1.
“I’m not sure what Williams is doing there, it’s ridiculous,” said Neville. “He’s experienced taking a chance like that. Not sure he followed through with it fully [the stamp on Can], but certainly a stupid and risky thing to do.
“Just kicks him in the back. Silly.”
Jurgen Klopp’s side got off to the best of starts when Sadio Mane’s powerful run from the middle of the park resulted in him finding the back of the net.
After continued pressure from the home team, Matthew Pennington found himself unmarked in the box from a corner as the youngster leveled the scores against the run of play.
However, the Toffees were not able to hold onto their lead for much long as Philippe Coutinho’s brilliant run resulted in him producing a magnificent curling finish past Joel Robles.
After the break, substitute Divock Origi scored within two minutes of coming onto the pitch when he brushed off the challenge from Williams to power the ball past Robles.
