Steven Gerrard will be “over the moon” after Rangers kept clean sheets in their opening two league games of the season, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Gers defender and boyhood fan of the club, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has lauded new arrival Leon Balogun as a “breath of fresh air” after he stepped into the starting XI at Ibrox.
The former Wigan man has been joined by Connor Goldson, James Tavernier and Borna Barisic in the backline for the wins over Aberdeen and St Johnstone.
Hutton claims that the Light Blues’ defensive performances will have Gerrard bouncing and insists that Balogun has had a big impact.
Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he’ll be more happy with that (the defending) than anything else.
“Two clean sheets, obviously out with the European game, talking about just the league, he’ll be over the moon.
“The signing of Balogun, he’s come in and been a breath of fresh air. He’s exactly what he wants, his experience, he’s shown great pace, he’s good on the ball, calm – I think him and Goldson are really starting to form a good partnership.
“He’ll be really happy with that, he’s probably worked with them a lot on the training pitch on it and he’ll be over the moon with the clean sheets – long may it continue.”
Gerrard also has Filip Helander to call upon at centre-back at present, with Nikola Katic set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury.
The Gers actually conceded the same number of goals as Celtic last season – 19 – but scored 15 less than the title-winners.
