Darren Bent has made a shock suggestion that West Brom should sign Tammy Abraham or Christian Benteke on loan to lead the line in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former 13-cap England striker delivered his verdict as the Baggies stepped up their pursuit of Troy Deeney.
This site revealed last week that the newly promoted side are in advanced talks to sign the 32-year-old after pulling clear of Tottenham in the race for his signature.
But Bent believes West Brom should instead target Abraham or Benteke who he sees as more natural goalscorers.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t know how much game time he’s going to get, so go and get Tammy Abraham from Chelsea.
“I don’t know if he’s going to play for Chelsea with (Timo) Werner and (Olivier) Giroud there, so there’s one right there.
“Not a permanent signing but a loan.
“Or Benteke, that’s another one who is available. I know he’s not scored many goals but if you tailor the system to him there’s another one.”
Abraham, 22, scored 18 goals in 47 games across all competitions last season for Chelsea last season.
However, he was left on the bench for the Blues’ opening game against Brighton with new signing Werner leading the line.
The England international has enjoyed previous loan spells at Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa.
Benteke, 29, scored twice in 24 Premier League games for Crystal Palace last season with 11 of those coming from the bench.
The Belgian face further competition for his place after Palace signed his international teammate Michy Batshuayi on loan from Chelsea.
