Kevin Phillips has urged Aston Villa to hand a new contract to forward Andre Green.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa Park hitman suggested that the 21-year-old is fully deserving of a new deal with his old club after impressing during his current loan spell with Charlton Athletic.

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Dean Smith’s side are closely monitoring the youngster with view to extending his contract in the midlands beyond its expiration at the end of the season.

Green as established himself as a key first team player at The Valley after hitting two goals and an assist in his six Championship outings so far, and it is understood that if he continues in that rich vein of form, he will be offered an extension by his parent club.

And Phillips has wholeheartedly backed the idea.

“It’s great that Villa and the player have agreed, collectively, that he should go out on loan and just play regularly,” he told Football Insider.

“Perform week in and week out, score the goals, help that team in their league, and progress your game knowing that if you do that you’ll probably get rewarded by your parent club, and you’ve got a chance of coming back and playing in the Premier League.

“Credit to Villa and Green, he’s going out and starting to make a name for himself, playing every week, and that can only help you and your parent club.

“He’s a young player, I’ve seen that he’s got potential, why would you not give him a new deal?”

Green spent the first half of the season on loan at Preston North End, but struggled to establish himself at Deepdale, making just four Championship appearances.

The versatile forward, who can also play as a central striker, had not made a match day squad for the promotion challengers since October prior to being recalled by Villa and shipped out to Charlton for the remainder of the campaign.
